An independent celebrant can create a funeral or memorial ceremony around your family’s beliefs, values and wishes, without being tied to a particular religion or humanist philosophy. As an Academy of Modern Celebrancy-accredited independent celebrant, I can include as much or as little faith as feels right, offering a flexible and respectful choice when relatives hold different beliefs.
Independent or Humanist Celebrant: What Is the Difference?
A Humanists UK celebrant creates ceremonies based on humanist values and will not usually include acts of worship. I am not a humanist celebrant. My independent role allows me to shape a ceremony without following one prescribed belief system, while always being honest about the service I provide.
This can be especially helpful when some family members would find comfort in a prayer or hymn and others prefer a mainly non-religious farewell. We can create a thoughtful balance that respects everyone while keeping the person you love at the heart of the ceremony.
A Ceremony Shaped Around Your Family
A non-religious or blended ceremony can be deeply personal and meaningful. It may include favourite music, poems, readings, stories, silence, symbolic rituals, prayers or blessings. There is no need to include anything that feels uncomfortable, and no important tradition needs to be excluded simply because the ceremony is celebrant-led.
I will listen carefully to your memories and wishes, explain the available choices and help you create a natural order for the day. A Funeral and Memorial Service can be connected directly to a cremation or burial, while a Celebration of Life may take place later at a venue and time chosen by the family. For someone with an Armed Forces connection, a Military Focused Ceremony can honour service and sacrifice with suitable dignity.
From Our First Conversation to the Ceremony
We will begin with a gentle, unhurried meeting where you can talk about your loved one, their values and the people and moments that mattered to them. You do not need to have everything decided. I can suggest music and readings, write the tribute, support family members who wish to contribute and liaise with your funeral director or venue.
I will share the draft ceremony with you and make agreed changes before the day. When the time comes, I will lead with warmth, calmness and care, ensuring that religious, spiritual and non-religious elements sit comfortably together and that everyone understands what to expect.
Fees and Frequently Asked Questions
My fee will be agreed clearly before we begin and will usually include our consultation, ceremony planning and writing, an agreed number of revisions, liaison with your funeral director or venue and leading the ceremony on the day. Extra meetings, rehearsals, printed materials, significant travel or unusual requests may cost more, but we will always discuss and agree this beforehand. Every family is different, so please feel comfortable speaking to me about your wishes and budget.
Can we include a hymn, prayer or blessing?
Yes. We can include the religious or spiritual elements that feel meaningful to your family, provided they are appropriate for the venue.
Can the ceremony be completely non-religious?
Absolutely. It can focus entirely on the person’s life, relationships, character and memories, using music, readings and personal tributes without religious content.
What if our family has different beliefs?
That is where an independent ceremony can be particularly helpful. I will listen to everyone’s priorities and help you find a respectful balance that feels comfortable and inclusive.
