I help families plan and lead personal ceremonies for the interment or scattering of ashes across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. I will help you choose meaningful words, readings, music, or simple rituals, while guiding you through permissions, venue arrangements, and practical details so the occasion feels calm, respectful, and true to the person you are remembering.
Choosing Between Interment and Scattering
Interment places the ashes in a grave, cremation plot, churchyard, memorial garden or natural burial ground, creating a recorded place to visit. Scattering releases the ashes into a chosen landscape or onto water and may suit someone who felt strongly connected to a particular place. You can also divide ashes between locations if that feels right for your family.
I will give you time to consider the atmosphere, accessibility, future visiting arrangements and any memorial you may want. A Funeral and Memorial Service can include an ashes ceremony, while a later Celebration of Life may bring a wider group together to share memories.
Ashes Locations Across the Three Counties
In Cambridgeshire, Cambridge Crematorium has gardens and woodland where ashes may be scattered, while the Arbory Trust’s Barton Woodland Burial Ground welcomes ashes interments. In Bedfordshire, Bedford Borough identifies a River Great Ouse scattering location beside Queens Bridge in Kempston, though you should always check current guidance before making arrangements.
In Northamptonshire, Hemington Natural Burial offers ashes interment in a developing native woodland, and The Windmills Natural Green Burial Ground offers natural ashes burial in a meadow and woodland setting. Warren Hill Crematorium also provides options for scattering on its lawns and interment in cremated-remains graves. Every site has its own rules, availability and charges, so I will help you identify the right questions and confirm arrangements with the venue.
Planning a Personal Ashes Ceremony
Your ceremony can be simple and private or include family and friends. I can write and lead a short tribute, invite memories, choose readings or music and include a symbolic action such as petals, a flower or a moment of silence. My Independent Celebrant service allows religious, spiritual and non-religious elements to sit together naturally.
For private land, you should obtain permission from the landowner. For water scatterings, follow environmental guidance: choose a quiet place away from other users, and avoid placing plastic, metal, or non-biodegradable tributes into the water. I will help you plan for wind, safe access and respectful handling of the ashes.
Ashes Ceremony Fees and FAQs
We will agree my fee clearly before we begin. It usually includes our consultation, ceremony planning and writing, an agreed number of revisions, liaison with the chosen venue, and leading the ceremony. Venue charges, plot or interment fees, permits, boat hire, printed materials, significant travel or unusual requests are not normally included, but I will explain what I can arrange and what must be paid directly. Every ceremony is different, so please speak openly with me about your wishes and budget.
Do we need permission to scatter ashes?
You need the landowner’s consent on land you do not own, and venues or councils may have their own rules. Water scatterings should follow current environmental guidance.
Can we inter only part of the ashes?
Usually, yes. Families may keep or scatter a portion elsewhere, subject to the chosen site’s rules and the wishes of the person authorised to hold the ashes.
Can you lead a very small ceremony?
Absolutely. I can lead anything from a quiet gathering of two or three people to a larger memorial ceremony with readings, music and contributions.
